Donald Walker Tunnage was born on October 20, 1968. He is an American lawyer. Since 2022, he has been a judge in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. This court handles many types of legal cases in Washington, D.C.

Donald Tunnage's Education

Donald Tunnage went to several great schools. In 1990, he earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, from Morehouse College. He graduated with high honors.

He then studied law at Duke University Law School. He received his law degree, called a Juris Doctor, in 1992. Later, in 2000, he earned a Master of Public Policy degree from the Harvard Kennedy School at Harvard University.

Legal Career

Donald Tunnage has had a long career helping people with legal issues. From 1993 to 1998, he worked as an assistant public defender in Miami, Florida. A public defender is a lawyer who helps people who cannot afford a lawyer.

After that, he joined the United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division. From 2000 to 2009, he was a civil trial attorney there. This means he worked on cases about people's rights. From 2009 until 2022, he worked as a criminal trial attorney in the same division.

Becoming a Judge

On September 30, 2021, President Joe Biden chose Donald Tunnage to become a judge. He was nominated to serve on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. This position became open when Judge Russell F. Canan's term ended.

The United States Senate had to approve his nomination. On November 18, 2021, a special meeting was held to discuss his qualifications. The Senate committee then sent his nomination to the full Senate for a vote on December 1, 2021.

On February 2, 2022, the Senate voted to move forward with his nomination. Finally, on February 7, 2022, the Senate officially approved him to be a judge. He was sworn in and began his new role on February 25, 2022.
