Daniel Babu Paul (born April 11, 1941 – died April 12, 2019) was an important Indian government official and a talented writer. He was part of the Indian Administrative Service, which is a group of top civil servants in India. He served as an Ombudsman for local government in Kerala from 2000 to 2001.
He also worked as the Finance Secretary for the Government of Kerala. He retired from his government job with the high rank of Chief Secretary. The government of Kerala decided to create a research center to honor his memory. They also planned to rename the Civil Service Academy after him.
About His Life
Daniel Babu Paul was born on April 11, 1941. His father, Fr. Paulose Cheerothottam Kor Episcopa, was a priest and a headmaster. His mother, Mary Paul, was a teacher. His brother, K. Roy Paul, also held an important position in the UPSC.
Babu Paul was a very bright student. He achieved a high rank in his 10th-grade exams. He then studied at Union Christian College in Aluva. Later, he earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from College of Engineering, Trivandrum.
He showed his brilliance again by getting the 7th rank across all of India in the tough Civil Service Exam. He even got the first rank in South India.
He passed away on April 12, 2019, at the age of 78. This was just one day after his birthday. He died due to a serious heart attack.
His wife, Anna Nirmala Babu Paul (1943–2000), was also a notable person. She was the former president of YWCA Trivandrum. She also served as the secretary of The Trivandrum's Women Club. She was a member of the Censor Board of Film Certification. Daniel Babu Paul is survived by his children, Cherian Paul and Mariam Joseph.

Babu Paul held many important positions throughout his career. These roles helped him serve the state of Kerala in different ways.

- Project Coordinator for the Idukki Hydel Project and District Collector (1971–1975)
- District Collector of Palakkad (1970–1971)
He was also a member of the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board. This board helps fund important projects in Kerala.
Books and Writings
Daniel Babu Paul was a very active writer. He published his first book when he was just 19 years old. This book, called Oru Yathrayude Ormakal, was about his trip to Europe. He went there to attend an International Students' Conference.
In 2001, he published his autobiography, Katha Ithuvare. This book shared stories from his life as a civil servant. He also wrote the first Malayalam Bible Dictionary, called Veda Sabda Rathnakaran. Another one of his notable books is A Queen's Story: Five Centuries of Cochin Port. He wrote many other books in both English and Malayalam.
