Darren Eric Henley (born July 9, 1959 – died October 28, 2022), known by his stage name D. H. Peligro, was an American musician. He was famous as the drummer for the punk rock band The Dead Kennedys. He also played drums for a short time with the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Music Career Highlights

Playing with The Dead Kennedys (1981–2022)

D. H. Peligro joined The Dead Kennedys in February 1981. He took over from their first drummer, Ted. His first recording with the band was on an EP (a shorter album) called In God We Trust, Inc.. This EP came out in December 1981.

He then recorded several studio albums with them. These included Plastic Surgery Disasters, Frankenchrist, and Bedtime for Democracy. The band also released a collection of singles and rare songs called Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death. The Dead Kennedys broke up in December 1986.

In 2001, The Dead Kennedys got back together. Peligro was part of this reunion. Their former lead singer, Jello Biafra, was not with them due to a legal disagreement about band earnings. Another singer, Brandon Cruz, joined for a while. Later, Jeff Penalty and then Ron "Skip" Greer became the lead singers.

Since reuniting, the band released live recordings. These included Mutiny on the Bay and Live at the Deaf Club. In 2007, a "best of" album called Milking the Sacred Cow came out. It had two live songs that had not been released before.

Peligro took a break from The Dead Kennedys in early 2008. He needed time off from touring. He rejoined the band in June 2009 and continued playing with them.

Time with Red Hot Chili Peppers (1988)

In 1988, Peligro joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers as their new drummer. He replaced drummer Jack Irons. Peligro had been friends with the band members for many years. He even played in a comedy band with singer Anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea.

Peligro helped write some songs for the band's fourth album, Mother's Milk. This album was released in 1989. However, Peligro did not play drums on the final album. He was replaced by Chad Smith a few weeks later. Chad Smith has been the Red Hot Chili Peppers' drummer ever since.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers were honored in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. Peligro was not included in this honor.

Other Music Projects

D. H. Peligro also played with many other bands. These included The Hellations, Jungle Studs, Nailbomb, The Feederz, Lock-Up, The Two Free Stooges, and SSI.

He was also the lead singer for his own band, called Peligro. This name means "Danger" in Spanish. His band released three albums: Peligro (1995), Welcome to America (2000), and Sum of Our Surroundings (2004). The album Sum of Our Surroundings won Rock Album of the Year from the American Independent Music Awards.

Peligro's music style was a mix of different sounds. He combined punk, reggae, funk, and heavy metal. He also led bands like Reverend Jones and the Cool Aid Choir and Al Sharpton's Hair and the Hellions. In 2020, Peligro recorded a song called "Power is Taken" with the artist Moby. This song was also on Moby's album All Visible Objects.

Later Life and Passing

D. H. Peligro passed away on October 28, 2022. He died at his home in Los Angeles. Police reported that he died from an accidental fall that caused a head injury.
