David John Butler is an American author who writes exciting stories. He writes in genres like fantasy, horror, and science fiction. He is especially known for his "flintlock fantasy" novels. These stories mix magic with old-fashioned guns.
His book Witchy Kingdom won a special award called the Dragon Award in 2020. It won for being the Best Alternate History Novel. Another one of his books, Witchy Winter, also won two big awards in 2018. These were the AML Award and the Whitney Award.
Life and Career
David John Butler went to New York University School of Law. He earned a special degree there in 1999. This degree allowed him to become a lawyer. He is married to Emily Butler.
For over ten years, he worked as a lawyer for different companies. In 2010, he started his own law firm. He also works as a corporate trainer. This means he teaches business people using his great storytelling skills.
Becoming an Author
In 2010, David decided to follow his childhood dream. He wanted to become an author. His first book, City of Saints, came out in 2012. It was a steampunk Western novel. This book was a finalist for the Whitney Award in the speculative fiction category. Speculative fiction includes fantasy, science fiction, and horror. He also worked as an editor for a publishing company called WordFire Press.
The Witchy Series
In 2017, a publisher named Baen released his first "flintlock fantasy" book. It was called Witchy Eye. This story is set in an alternate version of America in 1815. It was a finalist for a Dragon Award in 2017. It was also nominated for the Gemmell Morningstar Award in 2018.
The second book in the series was Witchy Winter. It won the AML Award for Best Novel in 2018. It also won the Whitney Award for Best Speculative Fiction in 2018. It was a finalist for the Dragon Award that same year. The third book, Witchy Kingdom, won the Dragon Award for Best Alternate History Novel in 2020.
