Dissanayaka Mudiyanselage Jayaratne (born June 4, 1931 – died November 19, 2019) was a well-known politician from Sri Lanka. People often called him D. M. "Di Mu" Jayaratne. He served as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka from 2010 to 2015.

Mr. Jayaratne was one of the people who helped start the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. He was first elected to the parliament in 1970. He became Prime Minister on April 21, 2010.

Early Life and Education

D. M. Jayaratne was born on June 4, 1931. He went to school at Doluwa Maha Vidyalaya and Zahira College in Gampola. Gampola is a town close to Kandy.

After the Sri Lanka Freedom Party was started in Kandy in 1951, Mr. Jayaratne worked as a teacher. He taught at Doluwa Maha Vidyalaya. Later, from 1960 to 1962, he worked as a Postmaster in Doluwa.

Political Journey

Mr. Jayaratne began his political career in local government. He was elected as a member of the Village Council of Doluwa. He later became the Chairman of this Village Council. He also led the Kandy District Village Council Chairmen Association.

Entering Parliament

He first became a member of parliament in the 1970 general election. He won his seat in the Gampola area as a candidate for the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).

He was re-elected to parliament in 1989. This was for the Kandy District under a new voting system. He received many votes, leading the SLFP list in Kandy.

Cabinet Minister Roles

In 1994, he was re-elected to parliament under the People's Alliance. President Chandrika Kumaratunga then made him a minister for the first time. He was appointed Minister of Land, Agriculture, and Forestry.

Over the years, he held several important roles in the government. Some of his ministerial positions included:

  • Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock (1994)
  • Minister of Agriculture and Land (1997)
  • Minister of Agriculture (2000)
  • Minister of Post and Telecommunication (2004)
  • Minister of Plantation Industries (2007)

Becoming Prime Minister

The United People's Freedom Alliance won the 2010 general election. As the most experienced member of the SLFP, Mr. Jayaratne was sworn in as Prime Minister. This happened on April 21, 2010.

In Sri Lanka, the Prime Minister's job is mostly ceremonial. This means it's an important role, but the President has more power. Along with being Prime Minister, he also looked after the Ministry of Buddha Sasana (Buddhism) and Religious Affairs.

Family Life

D. M. Jayaratne had three children. His youngest child, Anuradha Jayaratne, is also a politician. Anuradha has been a State Minister and is currently a member of parliament. His daughter studied at Manipal University in India.
