The Democratic Republic of the Congo, often called DR Congo, is a large country in Africa. It first joined the Olympic Games in 1968. Back then, it was known as Congo Kinshasa. After that, the country didn't compete again until 1984. At that time, its name was Zaire.
Since 1984, DR Congo has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games. However, they have never taken part in the Winter Olympic Games. By the year 2000, the country was once again known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
So far, no athlete from DR Congo has won an Olympic medal. This makes it the largest country by area, and the second most populated country in the world (after Bangladesh), that has not yet won an Olympic medal.
The National Olympic Committee for DR Congo was created in 1963. The International Olympic Committee officially recognized it in 1968. This recognition allowed DR Congo to send its athletes to the Olympic Games.
DR Congo at the Summer Olympics
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has participated in many Summer Olympic Games. Even though they have not won any medals, their athletes continue to represent their country with pride.
Here's a quick look at their journey through the Summer Olympics:
- In 1968, as Congo-Kinshasa, 5 athletes competed.
- They did not participate in the 1972, 1976, and 1980 Games.
- From 1984 to 1996, as Zaire, they sent between 8 and 17 athletes to each Summer Games.
- From 2000 onwards, as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, they have sent between 2 and 7 athletes to each Summer Games.
In every Summer Olympic Games they have attended, the country has not won any gold, silver, or bronze medals.
