Da Mao is a male giant panda born on September 1, 2008. He was born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China. His mother's name is Mao Mao, and his father is Yuhin/Xiongbang. Da Mao's name means "first of Mao" because he was the first cub born to his mother.
Da Mao's Journey to Canada
In 2013, Da Mao traveled to Canada as part of a special agreement between the governments of Canada and China. He and a female panda named Er Shun were meant to live in Canada for ten years. They were planned to spend five years at the Toronto Zoo and then five years at the Calgary Zoo.
However, in May 2020, the Calgary Zoo asked for both pandas to return to China. This was because it became very hard to get enough fresh bamboo for them during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Playful Panda Videos
While Da Mao lived at the Toronto Zoo, he became famous for his playful videos. These videos showed him having fun in the snow. One of the most popular videos showed him happily destroying a snowman. His keepers had made the snowman for him to play with. This kind of play helps animals stay active and happy.
