The Dade Monument is a special memorial at the United States Military Academy at West Point. It honors Major Francis L. Dade and the 110 soldiers he commanded. These brave men were defeated in a battle by Seminole warriors on December 28, 1835. This event is often called the Dade Massacre.
The monument was first built in 1845. It has been moved several times since then.
History of the Monument's Location
The Dade Monument has had a few different homes at West Point.
Original Spot
When it was first put up in 1845, the monument stood on the eastern edge of the Plain. This spot overlooked the beautiful Hudson River.
Moving for New Buildings
Before 1898, the monument was moved further inland. This was done to make space for a new building called Cullum Hall.
In 1917, it was moved again, this time further south. It was placed in front of the Old Cadet Library.
Current Location
The monument found its current home in 1948. It was moved near the entrance to the West Point Cemetery. This final move made way for the Patton Monument.
