Daedra Janel Charles (born November 22, 1968 – died April 14, 2018) was a talented American women's basketball player. She also worked as an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee. Daedra was a key player for the United States women's national basketball team. She helped her team win a bronze medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Daedra Charles went to the University of Tennessee. While there, she helped her college team win the NCAA Women's Championship twice. These big wins happened in 1989 and 1991. Because of her amazing career, Daedra Charles was added to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007.
Playing for Team USA
Daedra Charles was chosen to play for the national team at the 1992 Olympics. These games took place in Barcelona, Spain. The USA team started strong, winning their first three games. But then they played against the Unified Team and lost 79–73.
After that, the USA team played Cuba for the bronze medal. The game was very close at halftime. Cuba even had a small lead in the second half. But the USA team made a great comeback. They took the lead and won the game 88–74. This victory earned them the bronze medal. Daedra Charles scored about 6.2 points in each game during the Olympics.
Daedra continued to play for Team USA in 1994. She joined the national team for the World Championships in Sydney, Australia. The team was coached by Tara VanDerveer. They won their early games. Daedra was a top scorer against Spain, getting 18 points to help her team win. She also scored 22 points in a game against the host team, Australia.
The team then moved on to the medal rounds. They played against Brazil. Even though Katrina McClain scored 29 points, the USA team lost 110–107. Brazil made all ten of their free throws in the last minute. The USA team then played Australia again and won 100–95. This win secured another bronze medal for the team.

Death
Daedra Charles passed away on April 14, 2018. She was 49 years old. The cause of her death was not shared publicly.
