Daijō-daijin facts for kids
The Daijō-daijin (also called Dajō-daijin) was a very important government job in Japan. It was like being the Chancellor or Prime Minister of the country. This position existed mainly during the late Nara period and the Heian period.
History of the Position
The job of Daijō-daijin was officially created in the year 702. This happened when a set of laws called the Taihō Code was put into place. The Daijō-daijin worked as part of a special group called the Council of State (daijō-kan).
This Council of State had three main leaders:
- The Chancellor, or Prime Minister (the Daijō-daijin)
- The Minister of the Left (called the sadaijin)
- The Minister of the Right (called the udaijin)
This system of government changed a lot during the Meiji period in the late 1800s. Even though the old system was replaced, the job of Daijō-daijin was kept for a short time in the early Meiji government.
