The Sadaijin (Sadaijin (左大臣), meaning "Minister of the Left") was a very important government job in ancient Japan. This role existed during the late Nara period and the Heian period. Think of it like a senior minister or a top advisor to the emperor.

What Was the Sadaijin?

The job of Sadaijin was officially created in the year 702. This happened when a set of laws called the Taihō Code was put into place. The Sadaijin was a key member of a special group called the Council of State, or daijō-kan.

The Council of State

The Council of State was the highest government body in Japan at that time. It was usually made up of three very powerful people:

  • The Chancellor, also known as the Prime Minister (daijō-daijin). This was the most senior position.
  • The Minister of the Left (the Sadaijin).
  • The Minister of the Right (udaijin).

These three officials worked together to help the emperor rule the country. The Sadaijin was often the second most powerful person in the government. This system of government changed much later, during the Meiji period.
