Early Life and Family
Daisy comes from a family of creative people! Her mother, Sasha Von Scherler, was an actress. Her father, Paul Avila Mayer, was also involved in the arts. Daisy's grandfather, Edwin Justus Mayer, was a screenwriter who wrote stories for films.
Starting Her Career
Daisy loved theater from a young age. As a teenager, she helped out at the New York Shakespeare Festival. This experience helped her learn a lot about plays and acting.
After high school, Daisy went to Wesleyan University. She studied theater and history there. Her theater background was very helpful for her directing career. She learned how actors work on stage, and she used that knowledge when directing for movies and TV.
Before directing films, Daisy directed plays. She put on new versions of old classics. These included Electra by Euripides and two plays by William Shakespeare: The Tempest and Two Gentlemen of Verona.
Directing Movies
Daisy von Scherler Mayer directed her first big movie, Party Girl, in 1995. She also helped write the movie with her partner, Harry Birckmayer. The film starred Parker Posey and even Daisy's own mother, Sasha. Party Girl was very popular, and it later became a TV show. In 2023, the movie was updated and shown in theaters again.
One of Daisy's most famous movies for kids is Madeline, which came out in 1998. This film is based on the beloved children's books by Ludwig Bemelmans. It tells the adventures of a brave young French girl with red hair. The movie starred Frances McDormand, Nigel Hawthorne, and Hatty Jones as Madeline.
