Dale Crover's Musical Journey
Starting with Melvins
Dale Crover joined the band Melvins as their drummer in 1984. He took over from their first drummer, Mike Dillard. Dale and the band's singer, Buzz Osborne, are the only two members who have been in Melvins for every one of their studio albums.
In 1985, Dale played bass guitar in a band called Fecal Matter. He formed this band with Kurt Cobain, who later became famous with Nirvana. They recorded some songs together. One of these songs, "Spank Thru," later appeared on a Nirvana album. Fecal Matter broke up in 1986.
Playing with Nirvana
Dale Crover played drums on a ten-song demo for Nirvana in 1988. Many of these songs were later released on Nirvana albums. For example, "Floyd the Barber" and "Downer" appeared on their album Bleach.
Nirvana, with Dale on drums, played a concert in Tacoma, Washington, on the same day they recorded the demo. Later in 1988, Dale and his Melvins bandmate, Buzz Osborne, moved to San Francisco. Kurt Cobain asked Buzz for advice on a new drummer for Nirvana. Buzz suggested Dave Grohl, who later became Nirvana's famous drummer.
Dale briefly rejoined Nirvana for a short tour in 1990 with the band Sonic Youth. In 1991, he also played drums on an early version of the song "Drain You" with Kurt Cobain.
Melvins' Success and Tours
In 1993 and 1994, Melvins went on a big tour, playing in every state in the United States. They also released their first album with a major record company, Atlantic Records. This album was partly produced by Kurt Cobain.
Melvins also toured with Nirvana on their In Utero world tour. They even opened for Nirvana at what turned out to be Nirvana's very last concert in Munich. After Kurt Cobain's passing, Melvins used the money they earned from the canceled shows to record two of their most well-known albums in London.
In 1994, Dale started his own band called Altamont. He also helped produce and sang on the first album by the band Acid King.
After the 1990s, Dale Crover and Buzz Osborne continued to make a lot of music with Melvins. They have released almost thirty studio albums and many shorter albums (EPs). They have also toured constantly. They played with Nine Inch Nails in 1995 and later toured with Tool.
Melvins also toured with Faith No More and the famous punk musician Jello Biafra from the band Dead Kennedys. They even made an album together with Jello Biafra. Dale Crover also played drums on many songs for Mike Patton's project, Peeping Tom, in 2006. He has contributed to many other projects with Mike Patton as well. According to the music website Discogs, Dale Crover is credited on nearly 400 different music releases!
Solo Music
Dale Crover has also released three albums as a solo artist. These include The Fickle Finger of Fate and Rat-a-Tat-Tat. In 2024, he released a new album called Glossolalia. This album featured guest musicians like Tom Waits, Ty Segall, and Kim Thayil. Dale has also worked on other special projects, like "Hew Time," which featured other drummers.
Appearances in Media
Dale Crover appeared in Neil Young's music video for the song "Harvest Moon." He played a younger version of Neil Young in the video because he looked a lot like him.
Cartoon versions of Dale Crover and his bandmate Buzz Osborne also appeared in an episode of the TV show Uncle Grandpa.
