Discogs (pronounced "dis-KOGZ") is a huge online library and store for music. It's like a giant collection of information about almost every song, album, and music release ever made. People from all over the world help build this database.
You can find details about many types of music recordings there. This includes official releases, special promotional items, and even rare or unofficial recordings. Users can also buy and sell music items like vinyl records, CDs, or cassette tapes from other people online.
Discogs started with a focus on electronic music. However, it now covers all kinds of music styles and formats. By 2015, its goal was to list every physical piece of music ever created. As of 2025, its database has more than 18 million music listings added by users.
History of Discogs
Discogs was created in November 2000 by Kevin Lewandowski. He was a programmer who worked at a company called Intel. Kevin started Discogs from a computer in his own home.
At first, the website only focused on electronic music. But it quickly grew bigger. By 2015, Discogs had 37 employees working for it. It also had 3 million users and received about 20 million visits each month.
Buying and Selling Music
In 2005, Discogs added a special section called a "marketplace." This is where users can buy and sell music albums. It works a lot like other online stores such as Amazon or eBay.
Sellers list their music items for sale. When an item is sold, Discogs charges a small fee. Buyers can search for items using many filters. For example, they can look for music shipped from a certain country. They can also filter by format, music style, or the year the music was released.
At one point, Discogs offered a paid feature called "Market Price History." This let users see how much items had sold for in the past. However, by late 2007, all paid features were removed. This meant everyone could use the full website for free.
