The Dalhousie Arts Centre is a cool place at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It has many theatres, including one on the roof! There's also an art gallery, classrooms, and a sculpture garden. It's the top spot for performing arts in Halifax. The centre officially opened in November 1971. It's also where the Fountain School of Performing Arts is located.
The building has a modern and striking design. It was created by C.A.E. Fowler & Company, led by Charles Fowler. A Japanese educator named Junji Mikawa also helped a lot with the design. The inside was mostly designed by Andy Lynch. He was inspired by the work of another famous designer, Alvar Aalto.

Explore the Performance Spaces
The Dalhousie Arts Centre has several different places where shows and concerts happen. Each one is special and named after people who helped support the centre.
Rebecca Cohn Auditorium
The Rebecca Cohn Auditorium is a large concert hall and theatre. It has 1,023 seats, making it the biggest soft-seat venue in Halifax. This means it has comfy seats for everyone! It is the main home for Symphony Nova Scotia, a professional orchestra.
Joseph Strug Concert Hall
The Joseph Strug Concert Hall is a smaller, more intimate space. It has 300 seats and is perfect for chamber music. This type of music is played by a small group of instruments. This hall was added in 2023 as part of a big update to the building.
Sir James Dunn Theatre
The Sir James Dunn Theatre has 198 seats. It is a proscenium theatre, which means it has a stage that looks like a picture frame. It has special stadium seating, so everyone has a good view. It also has a fly tower, which is a tall space above the stage. This allows scenery and lights to be moved up and down easily.
David Mack Murray Studio Theatre (Studio 1)
The David Mack Murray Studio Theatre is an 80-seat black box theatre. It's called a "black box" because it's usually a simple, dark room. This allows for many different stage setups. It has a special lighting grid and catwalks. These are walkways high above the stage for technicians to work on lights and sound.
Elsie MacAloney Room
The Elsie MacAloney Room is a 90-seat hall. It is used for both lectures and small musical performances called recitals.
Outdoor Rooftop Theatre
The Dalhousie Arts Centre also had an open-air theatre on its roof. This unique space is now closed.
