Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Dalnaglar Castle is a cool old building from the 1800s. It's located in Scotland, near a place called Spittal of Glenshee in Perth and Kinross. You can find it on the east side of the Shee Water river.

A Glimpse into the Past

The land where Dalnaglar Castle stands probably became an estate in the late 1700s or early 1800s. There was once a smaller building called 'Dalnaglar Cottage'. This cottage was likely the main part of what later became the castle.

The castle you see today was probably built as a hunting lodge. A hunting lodge is a special house used by people who go hunting. The current large house, or 'castle', was built in 1864. It was built for a man named Robertson from Blairgowrie. He was a banker for Queen Victoria, who was the Queen of the United Kingdom at that time.

Today, part of Dalnaglar Castle is available for people to stay in. It's a unique place for a holiday!

Experts from Historic Environment Scotland have described the castle as a "Mid-Victorian baronial curiosity." This means it's an interesting building from the middle of the Victorian era. It shows a unique style of Scottish castle design.

Long ago, some of the castle's outdoor areas might have been designed like a Japanese garden. This would have made the grounds very beautiful and peaceful.
