Damon Evans (born November 24, 1949) is an American actor. He is well-known for playing Lionel Jefferson on the TV show The Jeffersons. He was the second actor to play this role. Damon Evans also played a young Alex Haley in the TV miniseries Roots: The Next Generations.

Early Life and Education

Damon Evans was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended the Interlochen Center for the Arts with a special scholarship. After finishing there, he studied at the Boston Conservatory of Music. While in Boston, he acted in several plays. These included Two If by Sea, Hair, and The Corner.

Acting Career

Damon Evans has performed in many plays. His early stage work included A Day in the Life of Just About Everyone. He also appeared in Bury the Dead and Love Me, Love My Children. He made his first appearance on Broadway in a play called The Me Nobody Knows. Other Broadway shows he was in include Via Galactica and Lost in the Stars.

He also toured as Judas and Jesus Christ in the concert version of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. He was also part of the Broadway musical Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope.

In the late 1980s, Evans performed in the opera Porgy and Bess. This was a special production at the Glyndebourne Festival. He also appeared in the 1993 TV version of this production. In this show, Evans played the character Sportin' Life. This role was originally created for the famous jazz bandleader Cab Calloway.
