The Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award is a very special honor given to writers. It celebrates a writer's entire career and their amazing contributions to science fiction and fantasy stories. The award is given by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA).

This award started in 1975. The first person to receive it was Robert A. Heinlein. In 2002, the award was named after Damon Knight. He was a very important person who helped start the SFWA. He passed away in 2002, and the award was named in his memory.

Each year, the SFWA can give out up to one of these awards. The winner is announced before the ceremony. The award is presented at the SFWA Nebula Awards banquet. Even though it's given at the same event, it's not actually one of the Nebula Awards. Only SFWA leaders and former presidents can suggest who should win. Then, most of these people must agree on the final choice.
