Map of Dampier Archipelago and Burrup Peninsula

The Dampier Archipelago is a group of 42 islands found off the coast of Western Australia. It is located near the town of Dampier in the Pilbara region.

This special area also includes many reefs, shallow areas called shoals, and narrow water passages. It has been the traditional home for five different Aboriginal language groups for thousands of years. The archipelago was formed about 7,000 years ago. This happened when sea levels rose and covered what used to be flat coastal land. The rocks underneath these islands are incredibly old, forming over 2.4 billion years ago!

The archipelago is named after William Dampier. He was an English explorer and a type of sailor known as a buccaneer. He visited the area in 1699. Dampier even named one of the islands Rosemary Island. Even though many ships and industries operate nearby, the archipelago has rich marine life and resources.

History of the Dampier Archipelago

The Dampier Archipelago is home to some of Australia's oldest known buildings. These structures are thought to be between 8,000 and 9,000 years old.

The largest island in this group was originally called Murujuga by the Yaburara people. Early British settlers later renamed it Dampier Island. Today, it is officially known as the Burrup Peninsula.

Aboriginal Heritage and Culture

The Yinidbarndi, Yaburara, Mardudhunera, and Woon-goo-tt-oo peoples have lived in this area for about 50,000 years. Their history and culture are deeply connected to the land and sea here.

In 1868, a very sad event known as the Flying Foam massacre took place in this area. During this time, many members of the Yaburara people were killed. This event is a tragic part of the region's history.
