Daniel Alcides Carrión García (born August 12, 1857 – died October 5, 1885) was a brave Peruvian medical student. He is famous for his important work on a disease now named after him, called Carrion's disease. He made a huge sacrifice to help doctors understand this illness better.
A Brave Experiment
In 1885, Carrión carried out a very brave experiment on himself. He wanted to understand a serious illness called Oroya fever. At the time, doctors did not know what caused this disease. They also did not know how it spread.
There were two forms of the illness. One was a severe, sudden sickness. The other was a long-lasting form with red, wart-like bumps on the skin. This second form was called verruga peruana. Carrión wanted to prove that these two forms were actually the same disease.
To do this, he allowed himself to be given a small amount of blood. This blood came from a patient who had the wart-like bumps. Carrión then carefully watched his own health. He recorded all the symptoms he developed.
He soon showed the signs of the severe form of the disease. This proved that the two forms were indeed linked. Sadly, Carrión became very ill and passed away from the disease. His sacrifice helped doctors learn a lot about Oroya fever. His work was crucial for finding ways to treat and prevent the illness.
Where He Is Buried
Carrión is buried in a special place in Lima, Peru. His mausoleum is located at the National Hospital Dos de Mayo.
A National Hero
On October 7, 1991, the government of Peru passed a law. This law officially declared Daniel Alcides Carrión a "National Hero" (Spanish: Héroe Nacional). This honor recognizes his great courage and his important contribution to medicine.
