Daniel Carlos Martínez Villamil was born on February 23, 1957. He is an industrial engineer and a politician from Uruguay. He has held many important jobs in his country's government. From 2015 to 2019, he was the intendant of Montevideo, which is like being the mayor of the capital city.
Before that, he was a Senator from 2010 to 2015. He also served as the Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining from 2008 to 2009. From 2005 to 2008, he was the president of ANCAP, Uruguay's state-owned oil company. Daniel Martínez is a member of the Socialist Party, which is part of the larger Broad Front political group. In 2019, he ran for president but did not win.

Early Life and Education
Daniel Martínez was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on February 23, 1957. He grew up in the Pocitos neighborhood. His family was a regular middle-class family.
He also has French citizenship. This is because his grandmother was born in France. His great-grandfather was a Uruguayan diplomat in France a long time ago.
Martínez went to Colegio Seminario for school. In 1981, he finished his studies at the University of the Republic. He earned a degree in electrical engineering. For many years, he was a Vice President of the Uruguayan Engineers' Association. He was also active in the Uruguayan Socialist Party during a time when the country was ruled by the military.
His Career in Government
Daniel Martínez has held several key positions in the Uruguayan government. He has worked in different areas, from energy to city management.
Leading ANCAP
From 2005 to 2008, Martínez was the president of ANCAP. This is Uruguay's national company that deals with oil and other fuels. He was in charge of this important company for three years.
Minister of Industry
After leading ANCAP, he became the Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining. He served in this role from March 2008 to August 2009. As minister, he helped guide Uruguay's industries and energy policies. He worked under President Tabaré Vázquez.
Mayor of Montevideo
In 2015, Daniel Martínez was elected as the Intendant of Montevideo. This means he became the head of the government for the capital city. He was like the mayor of Montevideo. He served in this role until April 2019. He resigned from this job to run for president. Christian Di Candia took over as intendant after him.
Running for President
In 2019, Daniel Martínez became the presidential candidate for the Broad Front. This is a big political group in Uruguay. He ran in the national elections.
The election was very close. He faced National Party candidate Luis Lacalle Pou. They had a second round of voting, called a runoff election. Martínez lost by a small number of votes. He accepted his defeat on November 28, 2019. He had chosen Graciela Villar to be his running mate.
