Daniel Carlos Martínez Villamil, born on February 23, 1957, is an engineer and politician from Uruguay. He was the leader of Montevideo, a big city in Uruguay, from 2015 to 2019.
Before that, he was a Senator, helping make laws for the country, from 2010 to 2015. He also worked as a minister for industry, energy, and mining from 2008 to 2009. From 2005 to 2008, he was in charge of ANCAP, a company that deals with oil and gas for the country. He belongs to the Socialist Party, which is part of a larger group called Broad Front. In 2019, he ran for president but was not elected.

Early Life and Education
Daniel Martínez was born in Montevideo on February 23, 1957. He grew up in a family that was quite traditional. He is the second and youngest son of Roberto Martínez and María de los Ángeles Villamil.
He also has French citizenship. This is because his grandmother was born in France. His great-grandfather also worked as a Uruguayan consul in France a long time ago.
Daniel grew up in the Pocitos neighborhood of Montevideo. He went to Colegio Seminario for school. In 1981, he finished his studies at the University of the Republic. He earned a degree in electrical engineering.
Political Career
Daniel Martínez has held several important roles in Uruguayan politics. He has been involved in public service for many years.
Minister of Industry
From March 3, 2008, to August 31, 2009, Daniel Martínez served as the Minister of Industry, Energy, and Mining for Uruguay. He worked under Tabaré Vázquez, who was the President at that time. He took over this role from Jorge Lepra.
Intendant of Montevideo
In the 2015 elections, Daniel Martínez was chosen to be the Intendant of Montevideo. This is like being the mayor or governor of the city. He led Montevideo from 2015 until April 2019. He left this position to run for president. Christian Di Candia took over as Intendant after him.
Presidential Candidate
Daniel Martínez was the candidate for president for the Broad Front party in the 2019 national elections. He chose Graciela Villar to be his running mate, meaning she would have been vice president if he had won.
The election was very close. He ran against Luis Lacalle Pou from the National Party. After all the votes were counted, Daniel Martínez was defeated by a small number of votes. He accepted the results on November 28, 2019.
