Daniel Scott Purvis (born 13 November 1990) is a former international artistic gymnast from Scotland. He was a three-time British all-around champion. Daniel trained at Southport YMCA. His coaches were Jeff Brookes and Andrei Popov. In 2015, he was part of the first British men's team to win a medal at a World Championships.

Becoming a Gymnast

Early Career and Junior Success

Daniel Purvis started his gymnastics journey early. As a junior, he showed great promise.

  • In 2006, he helped the Great Britain team finish 4th at the Junior European Championships in Greece.
  • Two years later, in 2008, he helped the British team win a gold medal at the Junior European Championships in Lausanne. He also won an individual silver medal in the all-around competition.

Senior Gymnastics Career

2010: First Big Medals

In 2010, Daniel Purvis became the British men's all-around champion. This was a big achievement for him.

2011: All-Around Star

Daniel continued his winning streak in 2011.

  • He won the all-around title at the British Championships again.
  • At the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Berlin, Germany, he earned a bronze medal in the all-around competition.
  • He also won the 2011 FIG World Cup Event in Glasgow.
  • At the 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Tokyo, Daniel was a strong performer for his team. He made it to the all-around finals and finished fourth, just missing a medal.
  • Thanks to his great performances, he was the overall winner of the World Cup Series for 2011.

2012: Olympic Glory

The year 2012 was very important for Daniel and the British team.

  • The British men's team needed to qualify for the Olympics. They did this at an Olympic Test event in London in January. Daniel performed very well, helping the team secure their spot.
  • He also had the highest all-around score at this event.
  • In May, Daniel led the British team at the European Championships in Montpellier. Even though he was feeling unwell, he performed strongly.
  • The team went on to win Britain's first-ever team gold medal at the European Championships!
  • In June 2012, Daniel won the British Artistic Gymnastics Championships for the third time in a row.
  • At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Daniel was part of the British men's team that won a bronze medal. This was a historic moment for British gymnastics.

2014: Commonwealth Success

Daniel continued to win medals in 2014.

  • At the 2014 European Men's Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Sofia, his team won a silver medal.
  • He also won a bronze medal on the floor exercise at this event.
  • At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Daniel had amazing success for Scotland.
    • He won a gold medal on the parallel bars.
    • He won a bronze medal on the rings.
    • He helped Scotland win a silver medal in the men's team event.

2015: World Championships Medal

In 2015, Daniel added more medals to his collection.

  • He won his second European all-around bronze medal at the 2015 European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Montpellier.
  • He was part of the British men's team at the World Gymnastics Championships. He performed very well, helping the team qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
  • The British team made history by winning a silver medal at the World Championships. This was the first time a British men's team had ever won a medal at a World Championships! They finished ahead of China, who were the reigning champions.
  • Daniel also competed in the all-around final, finishing 7th.

2016: Starting a Club

In 2016, Daniel started his own gymnastics club. It's called Dan Purvis Gymnastics. The club is based in Netherton and Southport. Its first sessions began on November 1, 2016.

2017: Retirement

On February 18, 2017, Daniel Purvis announced that he was retiring from competitive gymnastics.

2018: More Commonwealth Medals

Even after retiring from elite competition, Daniel still competed at the Commonwealth Games.

  • At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, he won a bronze medal on the floor exercise.
  • He also helped Scotland win a bronze medal in the team event.

2020: Hall of Fame

In January 2020, Daniel Purvis was honored for his amazing career. He was inducted into the British Gymnastics Hall of Fame. This is a special award for gymnasts who have achieved a lot.
