Danny Joseph Bakewell, born in 1946, is an American civil rights activist and a successful businessman, also known as an entrepreneur. He owns The Bakewell Company. This company owns many businesses, including the Los Angeles Sentinel newspaper. Since 2009, he has been the leader (Chairman) of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA).

Danny Bakewell's Early Life and Work

Danny Bakewell grew up in New Orleans. He went to St. Augustine High School there.

He helped start the National Black United Fund. This group helps support Black communities. For over 30 years, he was also the President of The Brotherhood Crusade. This organization works to help people with civil rights. He later left this role to focus on his other business projects.

In recent years, Bakewell has worked to make his company, The Bakewell Company, even bigger. It is the largest development company owned by a minority group on the West Coast. In 2004, he bought the Los Angeles Sentinel. This is the oldest and biggest Black newspaper in Los Angeles. A few years later, in 2007, he bought the radio station WBOK in New Orleans. He later sold WBOK to a company that actor Wendell Pierce partly owned.

In 2009, Danny Bakewell was chosen to be the Chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association. This group supports Black newspapers across the country.

Danny Bakewell's Family Life

Danny Bakewell and his wife, Aline, have two grown-up children. They also have four grandchildren. The Bakewell family lives in Bradbury, California.

He is a member of the Catholic faith.
