Danny Corcoran (ranger) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Danny Corcoran (born in 1916, died April 7, 1936) was a brave Newfoundland Ranger. A Ranger was like a policeman who helped keep the peace. Danny died during a solo trip across the wild lands of Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula. Many people remember his death as a sad event because he was only 22 years old.

A Brave Mission and a Tragic End

Danny Corcoran went into the wilderness during the cold winter. His mission was to protect the local caribou from poachers. Poachers are people who hunt animals illegally. Sadly, the young Ranger got lost. He suffered badly from frostbite, which is damage to the body from extreme cold. He also suffered from starvation, meaning he didn't have enough food.

Danny was a popular and respected Ranger in the communities along the coast. Because of this, a big rescue effort began to find him. However, bad weather made the search very difficult. Danny Corcoran was not found until 17 days after he first got lost. He was taken by boat to St. Anthony, but he passed away soon after.

Remembering Danny Corcoran

Danny's story and his brave actions have become a part of local history. His life and personality were written about in a book. The book is called "Will Anyone Search for Danny?" and was written by Earl Pilgrim.

There is also a song about Danny Corcoran. It tells the story of his difficult patrol across the Peninsula. The Carllion Showband recorded this song. It can be found on their "Tribute to Newfoundland" album. Gregory Donaghey sings the vocals on the song.
