Danny O'Donoghue (born Daniel John Mark Luke O'Donoghue on October 3, 1980) is an Irish singer and songwriter. He is famous for being the lead singer, or frontman, of the rock band The Script. Many people also know him as a coach from the first two seasons of the TV talent show The Voice UK.

Before he became famous with The Script, Danny was part of an Irish boy band called Mytown.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Danny O'Donoghue was born in Dublin, Ireland. His father, Shay O'Donoghue, was also a musician in a band called The Dreams. Danny is the youngest of six children and grew up in the Ballinteer area of Dublin.

When he was a kid, he didn't think he wanted to be a musician. However, he later changed his mind and decided to leave school to follow his dream of a career in music.

Starting His Career

In the late 1990s, Danny joined a band called Mytown with his friend, Mark Sheehan. Mark would later become a member of The Script, too. Mytown was signed to Universal Records in 1999 and had some success.

After Mytown, Danny and Mark moved to Los Angeles. There, they worked as producers and songwriters for famous artists like Britney Spears, Boyz II Men, and TLC.

After a year in Los Angeles, the two friends moved back to Dublin. They teamed up with drummer Glen Power and began creating their own music. In 2001, they formed the band that would become The Script.

Success with The Script

The Script released their first album, also called The Script, on August 8, 2008. Danny co-wrote every song on the album. It was a huge hit, especially in Ireland, where it reached number one on the Irish Album Chart.

The band has released six more albums since then:

  • Science and Faith (2010)
  • #3 (2012)
  • No Sound Without Silence (2014)
  • Freedom Child (2017)
  • Sunsets & Full Moons (2019)

The Script has toured all over the world, playing in huge arenas in cities like London, Manchester, and Birmingham.

Becoming a TV Star on The Voice UK

In 2012, Danny became a coach on the popular TV show The Voice UK. He worked alongside other famous musicians like Jessie J, will.i.am, and Sir Tom Jones. His bandmates supported his decision, saying it would help more people get to know The Script.

At first, some people on Twitter made fun of him, calling him "Danny I Dunno Who." But Danny proved them wrong. He said, "I know I’m on this show for what I’ve done in my career. I’ve spent 15 years in the music industry, it’s all I know."

The show made Danny very popular. In the first season, he coached singer Bo Bruce, who finished as the runner-up. He returned as a coach for the second season in 2013, where his singer, Andrea Begley, won the competition.

On July 16, 2013, Danny announced he was leaving the show to focus on his work with The Script.

Personal Life

Danny's father, Shay, passed away on February 14, 2008. Danny has a rose tattoo on his left arm to remember his dad. The song "If You Could See Me Now" from the album #3 is also dedicated to his father's memory. His mother, Ailish, passed away on February 8, 2019.

In June 2024, Danny shared that he had decided to focus on a healthier lifestyle. He is a fan of the English Premier League soccer team Manchester United.
