Who Was Darío Echandía?

Darío Echandía was the oldest of seven brothers. He studied at Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Senora del Rosario and Colegio de Araujo in Bogotá. In 1917, he earned degrees to become an attorney and a doctor in law. He married Emilia Arciniegas on August 2, 1936. Darío Echandía passed away on May 7, 1989, in Ibagué, Tolima.

A Life in Public Service

Important Roles

  • Judge: He served as a judge in the Supreme Court of Justice. This is Colombia's highest court.

  • In 1944, he became acting president again after an attempt to kidnap President Pumarejo.
  • He also briefly served as acting president in 1960 and 1967.
