He studied politics for a short time at the National University of Colombia in Bogotá. However, he left to become a journalist.

Getting Started in Politics
Alberto Lleras Camargo went to the Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario school. In 1929, he was chosen to be a deputy assemblyman for the Bogotá city council. This was his first step into politics. The next year, he became a secretary for the Colombian Liberal Party. In 1931, he was elected to the Colombian Chamber of Representatives. In that same year, he became the first Liberal Party member to lead the Chamber in over forty years.
After Alfonso López Pumarejo became President of Colombia in 1934, Lleras Camargo was made Cabinet Secretary. In 1935, he became the Minister of Government. He stayed in this job until López Pumarejo's term ended in 1938. In 1938, he started a newspaper called El Liberal. This newspaper supported López Pumarejo running for president again.
In 1941, Lleras Camargo returned to lead the Chamber of Representatives once more. When López Pumarejo was re-elected president in 1942, he again made Lleras Camargo the Minister of Government. He held this position until 1944. During this time, he briefly served as the Colombian Ambassador to the United States in 1943. In July 1944, after President López Pumarejo stepped down, Lleras Camargo helped stop an attempt to overthrow Darío Echandía, who was temporarily acting as president.
Leading Colombia and the World
In 1945, Lleras Camargo became the Minister of Foreign Relations. In this role, he represented Colombia at important international meetings. These included the Chapultepec Conference and the United Nations Conference on International Organization in San Francisco. This conference helped create the United Nations.
Later that same year, he was chosen to be the Acting President of Colombia. He held this position until 1946, when Mariano Ospina Pérez was elected president. At just 39 years old, Lleras Camargo was one of the youngest acting presidents in Colombia's history. During his short time in office, the Greater Colombian Merchant Fleet was started. Also, the Constitutional Reform of 1945 was completed.
Founding the Organization of American States
After leaving the presidency in 1946, Lleras Camargo started a respected news magazine called Semana. Because of his experience as Minister of Foreign Relations and President, he was named Director of the Pan American Union in 1947. He worked to reorganize this group, which led to the creation of the Organization of American States (OAS) in 1948.
Lleras Camargo was the first Secretary General of the OAS from 1948 to 1949. He then served a full five-year term from 1950 to 1954. During his second term, the OAS became a stronger organization for countries in North and South America. More countries joined and took part in its activities.
