Darbyville is a small place in Appanoose County, Iowa, USA. It's called an unincorporated community because it doesn't have its own local government like a mayor or city council.

A Look Back: Darbyville's History

The Coal Mine

Long ago, Darbyville was built around a coal mine. This mine was very important for the people living there. But in 1901, something unexpected happened: the mine accidentally filled with water and had to close down. This was a big change for the community.

The Post Office

Even though it was a small place, Darbyville had its own post office. It opened in 1891, which means people could send and receive letters right there. The post office stayed open for nearly 20 years, closing in 1910.

How Many People Lived There?

In 1940, a long time after the mine closed and the post office shut down, only 44 people lived in Darbyville. This shows it was a very small community.
