Darlene Mealy, born on August 31, 1964, is an American politician. She is a member of the New York City Council. This council helps make important decisions for New York City. She represents the 41st district. This district includes neighborhoods like Brownsville, Bushwick, Crown Heights, East Flatbush, and Prospect Lefferts Gardens in Brooklyn.

Darlene Mealy is a member of the Democratic Party. She served on the City Council before, from 2006 to 2017. In 2021, she won an election against the person who held the seat before her, Alicka Ampry-Samuel.

About Darlene Mealy

Darlene Mealy was born in Detroit, Michigan. She went to public schools there. She graduated from George Wingate High School. After high school, she studied at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC). She also took classes in Labor & Women’s Studies at Cornell University.

Before she became a council member, Mealy worked for the New York City Transit Authority. She worked there for 17 years. She was part of the Department of Buses Technical Services Division.

Her Work in the New York City Council

Darlene Mealy was first elected to the 41st district of the New York City Council in 2005. She won against William Boyland, Jr. She was re-elected in 2009. She won that election by a small number of votes against Tracy E. Boyland.

In 2010, Mealy was also chosen as the Democratic District Leader. This was for the 55th Assembly District in Brooklyn. She won against Latrice Walker. Latrice Walker later became an assemblymember in New York State. Mealy was elected for her third term on the City Council in 2013. She won with 66% of the votes.

During her time on the Council, Mealy led the Contracts Committee. This committee looks at agreements the city makes. She also helped lead the Council’s Brooklyn delegation. This group represents Brooklyn in the Council. She was also a member of the Black, Latino and Asian Caucus. She was part of the Women’s Caucus too. These groups work on issues important to different communities.

She was part of an important vote in 2008. This vote was about changing the rules for how many terms a mayor could serve. Mayor Michael Bloomberg wanted to run for a third term. Mealy voted "yes" on this issue.
