Alicka Ampry-Samuel (born May 6, 1976) is an American lawyer and politician. She is a member of the Democratic Party. She used to be a member of the New York City Council for the 41st district. This district covers parts of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Ocean Hill-Brownsville, East Flatbush, and Crown Heights in Brooklyn.

In 2021, Ampry-Samuel lost her re-election bid to Darlene Mealy. Mealy was the person Ampry-Samuel had replaced four years earlier.

Early Life and Education

Ampry-Samuel was born on May 6, 1976. She grew up in Brownsville, a neighborhood in Brooklyn. She went to North Carolina A&T State University. Later, she studied law at the CUNY School of Law.

Career

Ampry-Samuel first tried to join the City Council in 2005. She ran in the Democratic primary election but did not win.

Before becoming a politician, Ampry-Samuel worked with children. She was a Child Protective Specialist for the NYC Administration for Children Services. This job involved helping to keep children safe.

From 2012 to 2014, she worked at the U.S. Embassy in Ghana. There, she helped with communication and outreach for the United States Agency for International Development. She also worked on human rights issues. Later, she was the Chief of Staff for State Assemblywoman Latrice Walker. A Chief of Staff helps manage an elected official's office.

New York City Council

In 2017, Councilwoman Darlene Mealy could not run for re-election. This was because of term limits, which means a person can only serve a certain number of terms. Ampry-Samuel was one of nine Democrats who wanted to take her place. Ampry-Samuel won the Democratic primary election with just over 31% of the votes.

She then won the main election in the district. This district usually votes for Democrats. She received over 95% of the votes. Alicka Ampry-Samuel officially started her term on January 1, 2018.

Housing and Urban Development

On January 18, 2022, Ampry-Samuel started a new job. She became the Regional Administrator for New York and New Jersey. This role is part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). HUD is a government department that helps people with housing and community development.
