She represented the 41st district, which covers parts of Brooklyn. These areas include Bedford-Stuyvesant, Ocean Hill-Brownsville, East Flatbush, and Crown Heights.

In 2021, she ran for re-election but lost to Darlene Mealy. Darlene Mealy had been the Council member before Alicka Ampry-Samuel.

Early Life and Education

Alicka Ampry-Samuel was born on May 6, 1976. Her birthplace was Brownsville, a neighborhood in Brooklyn. She went to North Carolina A&T State University. Later, she studied law at the CUNY School of Law.

Career Path

Before becoming a politician, Ampry-Samuel worked to help children. She was a Child Protective Specialist for the NYC Administration for Children Services. This job involved protecting kids.

From 2012 to 2014, she worked in Ghana. She was at the US Embassy there. She helped with communication and outreach for the United States Agency for International Development. She also worked on human rights issues. Later, she served as Chief of Staff for State Assemblywoman Latrice Walker.

Serving on the New York City Council

In 2017, the Council member for the 41st district, Darlene Mealy, could not run again. This was because of term limits. Alicka Ampry-Samuel was one of many Democrats who wanted to take her place.

Ampry-Samuel won the Democratic primary election. She received just over 31% of the votes. After that, she won the main election. She got more than 95% of the votes in her district. She officially started her job on January 1, 2018.
