What Does the Darling Inn Look Like?
The former Darling Inn building stands out on Depot Street. This street is the main road in downtown Lyndonville. It is a large building made of brick. It has 3-1/2 stories, which means three full floors and a half-floor on top. The roof slopes down on the sides.
There are parts of the roof that stick out at each end. Smaller roof sections, called dormers, also stick out from the main roof. A big porch covers the front of the building. This porch has a flat roof and is held up by many columns. The main entrance has a pointed roof design above it. Most windows have 8 small panes on top and 8 on the bottom. Some windows above the entrance are special. They have a large central window with two narrow windows on its sides.
The Inn's Special Design Features
The windows on the ground floor are larger. They are set in round-shaped openings. These details make the Darling Inn unique. Its design shows the popular styles of its time. It blends old-fashioned looks with newer ideas.
A Look Back: The Inn's History
The spot where the Darling Inn stands has likely had a hotel for a long time. Lyndonville was founded in 1866. A hotel called the Lyndon Hotel was there before. Sadly, it burned down in 1924. After the fire, local business people decided to build a new hotel. They formed a committee to plan it.
Who Built the Darling Inn?
The land belonged to Elmore Darling. He was a local businessman and a generous person. He used to work in the hotel business in New York City. Then he moved back to his large estate north of town. The main design for the new hotel came from Wells and Hudson. They were architects from Hanover, New Hampshire. But Elmore Darling himself designed the dining room. He made it very detailed and fancy.
When the Darling Inn opened in 1928, it was very grand. People said it was the most luxurious hotel in all of Vermont. It was a proud building for the town.
How the Inn Changed Over Time
The Darling Inn did not stay a hotel forever. In 1964, it was changed into a nursing home. A nursing home is a place where older people can live and get care. Later, the building was changed again. Now, it has been turned into apartments. This means many people can live there today. The building continues to be an important part of Lyndonville's history.
