Darragh is a small, unincorporated community in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. An "unincorporated community" means it's a recognized place but doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
This community was originally a "coal town." This means it was built mainly to support coal mining operations nearby. Darragh is located about 1 mile west of Arona, along Pennsylvania Route 136. It has its own post office, which first opened on July 21, 1892. The ZIP code for Darragh is 15625.
History of Darragh
Darragh was founded in 1890 by the Madison Coal Gas Company of Greensburg, Pennsylvania. It was created to provide homes and services for workers at the nearby Madison coal mine.
Over time, Darragh became a very important center for the Keystone Coal and Coke Company. This company operated several large coal mines in the area, including the Madison, Arona, Sewickley, and Keystone Shaft mines. Together, these mines employed around 1,000 people.
Darragh's population was largest around the end of the First World War. This was when the four Keystone mines were producing the most coal. However, by 1925, the Madison, Arona, and Sewickley mines had stopped operating.
The last major mine, the Keystone Shaft mine, closed in the mid-1930s. By 1938, the Keystone Coal and Coke Company had completely left Darragh. This marked the end of Darragh's time as a busy coal town.
