Darrell Sherman's Baseball Journey
College Star
Darrell Sherman went to Lynwood High School in California. After high school, he started his college baseball career at Cerritos College. His team had an amazing record, winning 84 games and losing only 11 during his two years there.
In 1988, Darrell set new school records at Cerritos College. He scored the most runs, had the most walks, reached base the most times, and stole the most stolen bases. He then decided to play for Long Beach State. In 1989, Darrell helped lead the Long Beach State Dirtbags to the College World Series. This is a very important tournament for college baseball teams.
Joining Professional Baseball
The San Diego Padres picked Darrell Sherman in the sixth round of the 1989 Major League Baseball draft. This meant he was chosen to play for a professional team. In December 1991, another team, the Baltimore Orioles, selected him in a special draft called the Rule 5 draft.
The Orioles thought Darrell might become their main leadoff hitter. A leadoff hitter is the first batter in the lineup. However, before the 1992 season began, Darrell was sent back to the San Diego Padres.
Major League Debut
Darrell spent the next year playing in the minor leagues. These are teams that help players get ready for the Major Leagues. In November 1992, he was added to the Padres' main roster of 40 players.
He made his first appearance in Major League Baseball on April 8, 1993. This game was against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Three Rivers Stadium. Darrell entered the game in the sixth inning as a pinch hitter. A pinch hitter is a player who bats in place of another player. He hit a double off the pitcher, which means he hit the ball and reached second base safely.
Darrell played in 37 of the Padres' first 42 games that season. His 37th and final Major League game was on May 22, 1993.
After MLB and Coaching
Darrell Sherman continued to play professional baseball until 2006. For the last seven years of his playing career, he played in the Mexican League.
After he stopped playing, Darrell became a coach. Before the 2008 season, he was named the hitting coach for the Eugene Emeralds. He has also coached at Long Beach Wilson High School and for the Tomateros de Culiacán. He even returned to coach at his old college, Cerritos College.
