Early Life and Education

Darrin Patrick was born in Marion, Illinois. He became a Christian when he was in high school. He was a talented baseball player, known as an all-conference and all-area catcher. Instead of playing college baseball, he decided to focus on becoming a pastor.

He studied hard and earned several degrees. In 1994, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible and Biblical Languages from Southwest Baptist University. He then graduated with high honors from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1997, earning a Master of Divinity degree. Later, in 2010, he completed his Doctor of Ministry degree from Covenant Theological Seminary. He got married in 1993 and had four children.

His Ministry Work

In 2002, Darrin Patrick moved to St. Louis, Missouri, to start The Journey church. This church grew very quickly in St. Louis and the surrounding areas. The Journey became a multi-site church, meaning it had six different locations in Missouri and Illinois, including his hometown of Marion.

Patrick also served as the chaplain for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. He led chapel services and Bible studies for the players during the baseball season. He was often with the players before or after their home games. After the 2013 season, he even officiated the wedding of Cardinals pitcher Shelby Miller. As a chaplain, he was part of Baseball Chapel, an organization that supports chaplains in professional baseball.

Beyond his church, Darrin Patrick was a vice-president of the Acts 29 Network. He was also a council member of The Gospel Coalition. This group includes many well-known Christian leaders from across the United States, like D. A. Carson, Tim Keller, and John Piper. He wrote articles for magazines like Christianity Today and The Leadership Journal. He also contributed to The Resurgence blog. He was interviewed by The Christian Post and appeared on TV shows like Fox & Friends. His work was also mentioned in major news outlets like The New York Times, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and BBC News Online.

Stepping Down from Leadership

In April 2016, the leaders of The Journey church announced that Darrin Patrick was stepping down from his role. He also had to leave all his leadership positions within the church and other organizations. This decision was made because of ongoing issues with his leadership and behavior. The church leaders had tried to help him with these issues for several years, but they felt he had not made the necessary changes. After this, his name was removed from The Gospel Coalition's council and the board of directors of the Acts 29 Network. He later spoke at a conference in 2017 about the lessons he learned from this experience.

Returning to Ministry

After a period of reflection and guidance from Greg Surratt, the founding pastor of Seacoast Church, Darrin Patrick joined the staff at Seacoast in June 2017. He became a teaching pastor there. In 2019, he co-founded a podcast called The Pastors Collective with Greg Surratt. He also worked as a coach through Crosspoint Ministries, helping people understand personality types. Additionally, he coached pastors through The Association of Related Churches (ARC) on how to build healthy church communities.
