Darrius Barnes (born December 24, 1986) is a former American soccer player. He spent most of his professional career playing as a defender for the New England Revolution. This team is part of Major League Soccer (MLS), which is the highest level of professional soccer in the United States. After retiring from playing, Darrius Barnes became the president of Crown Legacy FC. This team is part of MLS Next Pro and is connected to Charlotte FC.

Darrius Barnes' Soccer Journey

Early Days: High School and College Soccer

Darrius Barnes played high school soccer at Southeast Raleigh High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was a starter on the Varsity team for all four years. In his senior year, he helped his team win their first-ever conference championship. They defeated a strong Broughton High School team in the finals. Barnes was recognized for his skills, earning a spot on the TAAC All-Conference team in 2005.

After high school, Barnes played college soccer at Duke University. While in college, he also played for two teams in the USL Premier Development League. These teams were Raleigh CASL Elite and Cary RailHawks U23's.

Professional Career Highlights

Darrius Barnes began his professional journey in 2009. He was chosen by the New England Revolution in the third round of the 2009 MLS SuperDraft. He officially joined the club on March 17, 2009.

Making His Mark in MLS

Barnes made his first professional appearance on March 21, 2009. This was in the New England Revolution's first game of the 2009 MLS season. He played against the San Jose Earthquakes. Barnes achieved something very special that year. He became only the second rookie in MLS history to play every minute of every game. The first player to do this was Michael Parkhurst in 2005. Barnes was also the only outfield player to play every minute of every game in the 2009 season. He helped the Revolution set a club record by not letting opponents score for 386 minutes.

In 2011, Barnes was a finalist for the MLS Fair Play Award. This award recognizes players who show good sportsmanship.

First Goal and Milestones

On September 22, 2012, Darrius Barnes scored his first and only professional goal. This happened in a match against the New York Red Bulls. He found the net in the 95th minute of the game. His goal helped the Revolution get a 1-1 tie.

Barnes reached another milestone on March 15, 2014. He made his 100th appearance in an MLS game. Later that year, on September 7, 2014, he made his 100th MLS start. This game was against the Chicago Fire.

After leaving the New England Revolution at the end of the 2016 season, Barnes joined the New York Cosmos. This team was part of the North American Soccer League. He joined them on March 24, 2017.

On December 15, 2017, Darrius Barnes announced that he was retiring from playing professional soccer.

Life After Playing Soccer

After retiring as a player, Darrius Barnes continued to work in soccer. He joined the offices of Major League Soccer. By June 2020, he was working for the league in their marketing department.

In March 2022, Charlotte FC announced a new role for Barnes. They named him the president of their MLS Next Pro team, Crown Legacy FC. This shows his continued dedication to the sport.
