Darryl DeWayne Motley, born on January 21, 1960, is a former American baseball player. He was an outfielder in Major League Baseball (MLB). Motley played for the Kansas City Royals and Atlanta Braves. His MLB career lasted six seasons, from 1981 to 1987.

During his time in MLB, Motley played in 413 games. He hit 44 home runs and had 159 runs batted in (RBIs). His batting average was .243. After playing in the MLB, Motley also played baseball in Japan. He played for the Chiba Lotte Marines in 1992 and 1993.

Playing Career Highlights

Darryl Motley started the 1985 baseball season as the main left fielder for the Kansas City Royals. He had a bit of a tough start that season. So, the team brought in another player, Lonnie Smith, on May 17. Motley then moved to play right field. He would share playing time with Pat Sheridan.

1985 World Series Hero

Motley, who batted right-handed, became a hero in the 1985 World Series. He hit a big 2-run home run for the Royals. This home run was against the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 7 of the Series. It gave Kansas City an early 2–0 lead.

His home run went into the left field stands. It happened on a 3–2 pitch. Right before that, he had hit another 3–2 pitch to the same spot, but it went foul. Motley was so frustrated that he slammed his bat, breaking it. After getting a new bat, he hit the winning home run. Motley also caught the final out of the Series, a fly ball hit by Andy Van Slyke. This made the Royals the champions!

Later MLB Seasons

In 1986, Motley was competing for the right field position again, this time with Pat Sheridan. The Royals decided to release Sheridan. They then signed Rudy Law to share playing time with Motley. Later that year, on September 23, Motley was traded to the Atlanta Braves. He played for the Braves until 1987.

Playing in Independent Leagues

After his time in MLB and Japan, Motley continued to play baseball. He played four years for the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks. This team was part of the Northern League, which was an independent league. He played for them from 1996 to 1999.

In the Redhawks' first season in 1996, Motley had a fantastic year. He batted .346, hit 26 home runs, and had 103 RBIs. This was all in 82 regular season games.
