Daulton was a small, unofficial community in Madera County, California. An "unincorporated community" means it was a place where people lived, but it didn't have its own official town government. Daulton was located about 8 kilometers (5 miles) southwest of Raymond. It sat at an elevation of 123 meters (404 feet) above sea level.

Discovering Daulton

Daulton was once an active spot, especially because of its connection to a railroad. It was built along the Raymond Branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad. This railway was important for moving goods and people in the area.

A Look Back: Daulton's History

A post office served the Daulton community for a few years, from 1899 to 1908. The name "Daulton" was chosen to honor Henry C. Daulton. He was a key person in setting up Madera County. Mr. Daulton also helped the railroad by giving them land for their tracks.

The Copper Mine

One of the most important things about Daulton was its copper mine. This mine started operating way back in the 1860s. It was run by a company called the California Copper Company.

Miners would dig up copper ore from Daulton and nearby mines. This ore was a rock that contained valuable copper metal. The ore was then transported to a special factory called a smelter in Madera. At the smelter, the copper was separated from the rock.

The Railroad's End

The railroad line that connected Daulton to Raymond was very important for the mine. However, this part of the railway was closed down and removed in 1946. The rest of the railroad was also abandoned a few years later, in 1956. Today, there isn't much left at the old Daulton site.
