Dave Penney's Playing Days
A scout from Derby County noticed Dave's talent. He was offered a contract with the club, which was then in the Football League Third Division. Dave helped Derby County climb two divisions. After that, he moved to Oxford United for £175,000.
He then played for Welsh clubs Swansea City and Cardiff City. In 1998, he joined Doncaster Rovers. Dave played as a midfielder, which is a player who helps both attack and defend.
Managerial Career
In 2002, Dave Penney stopped playing to become a football manager. He stayed at Doncaster Rovers and took on the manager's job full-time.
Leading Doncaster Rovers
In his first full season, Dave guided Doncaster back into the Football League. This happened after they won the 2003 play-off final. They didn't stay in Division Three for long. Dave led Doncaster to win the Division Three title!
During his time at Doncaster, Dave famously led his team to victories over big Premier League clubs. They beat Manchester City and Aston Villa. They almost beat Arsenal in the League Cup quarter-finals, but lost in a penalty shootout. Dave left Doncaster Rovers on August 30, 2006. He felt he had taken the club as far as he could.
Managing Darlington
On October 30, 2006, Dave was appointed manager of Darlington. He returned to Doncaster with Darlington for a game on January 9, 2007. Doncaster won the game 2–0. Dave received a warm welcome from the home fans at the new Keepmoat Stadium.
Time at Oldham Athletic
Dave Penney became the manager at Oldham Athletic on April 30, 2009. He left the club on May 6, 2010. This was by mutual agreement, partly because fewer fans were coming to watch the games.
Short Spell at Bristol Rovers
On January 10, 2011, Dave was appointed manager of League One club Bristol Rovers. However, his time there was short. He was sacked less than two months later. He had lost nine out of his 13 games in charge. His last game was a 2–0 defeat against Dagenham and Redbridge.
While at the Memorial Stadium, he only managed two wins. These were against Swindon Town and Oldham Athletic. He also saw his team lose 6–1 away to Walsall.
Assistant and Sporting Director Roles
As of May 13, 2013, Dave was interested in a coaching role at Southend United. He was hired as an assistant coach and stayed until June 2015. In September 2016, Penney became an assistant manager again, this time for Guiseley. He and manager Adam Lockwood were both fired on August 30, 2017.
On October 1, 2017, York City hired Dave Penney as their sporting director. This role involves helping with the club's football strategy and player development. On August 11, 2022, York City announced that Dave had left the club by mutual agreement.
