David Ranibok Waiau Adeang was born on November 24, 1969. He is an important politician from the island nation of Nauru. Currently, he serves as the President of Nauru. Before becoming president, he held many other important jobs. He was the Speaker of the Parliament of Nauru, which is like the leader of the country's main law-making group. He also served as Nauru's Minister of Finance and Justice.

Early Life and Political Start

David Adeang's father, Kennan Adeang, was also a president of Nauru three times. David started his career as a lawyer. In 2001, he won a special election to become a Member of Parliament for the Ubenide area.

In May 2003, Nauru was facing some challenges. David Adeang was elected to Parliament again. His political group, Nauru First, joined with Ludwig Scotty's supporters. Scotty became president, and Adeang became the Minister of Finance. He held this role for about three months.

In 2004, Adeang became the Speaker of the Parliament of Nauru for a short time. Later that year, he became the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Justice. This was a big deal because he was the first foreign minister who was not also the President of Nauru. Before him, the president always held both jobs. Adeang was re-elected to Parliament in October 2004. He then became the Minister of Finance again, while also staying as Foreign Minister.

He was one of the people who helped start the Nauru First party. For a while, this was the only political party in Nauru.

Political Events in 2007

David Adeang was re-elected to Parliament easily in August 2007. He got the most votes in his area, Ubenide.

Views on Other Countries

In September 2007, as Foreign Minister, Adeang visited Cuba. He spoke positively about Cuba and shared his thoughts on how the United States handled its foreign policy.

Changes in Government

Some disagreements arose within the government led by President Scotty. This led to some ministers leaving their jobs. On November 13, 2007, there was a vote to remove President Scotty from office. This vote did not pass. However, another vote on December 19 was successful. Marcus Stephen became the new president. Stephen then chose Kieren Keke to be the new Foreign Minister, replacing Adeang.

Political Events in 2008

Working with Former Leaders

In March 2008, Adeang worked with former President Rene Harris. They tried to propose a vote to remove President Marcus Stephen. However, this attempt was stopped when the Speaker of Parliament resigned. It was interesting because Adeang had often disagreed with Harris's past decisions.

Becoming Speaker of Parliament

Soon after, in March 2008, David Adeang became the Speaker of the Parliament of Nauru. He took office on March 20, 2008.

On March 22, Adeang called a meeting of Parliament. Some government ministers said they were not told about the meeting and did not attend. The members who were there, including Adeang, passed a rule. This rule said that Members of Parliament could not have citizenship in two countries. If this rule was used, some important government ministers might have to leave Parliament. The government said this rule was not fair because not enough members were present for the meeting to be official. President Marcus Stephen said Adeang and the other members passed the rule "after dark on Easter Saturday." Adeang, however, said the meeting was valid.

Political Disagreements

On March 28, Adeang, as Speaker, asked two government ministers to leave Parliament based on the new rule. They refused.

The disagreements continued into April 2008. The government said that the Supreme Court had ruled in their favor. This meant the rule about dual citizenship was not valid because not enough members were present when it was passed. The Court also said that the Speaker could not decide who was eligible to be a Member of Parliament; only the Supreme Court could. Adeang said he would get legal advice before responding.

On April 10, Adeang, as Speaker, suspended President Marcus Stephen and all his supporting ministers from Parliament. On April 18, President Stephen declared a state of emergency. He dissolved Parliament and called for new elections. He said he wanted to solve the ongoing disagreements between the government and Parliament. Adeang had been suggesting new elections for several weeks.

New Speaker Chosen

After the elections on April 26, 2008, President Marcus Stephen gained more support. Riddell Akua became the new Speaker of the Parliament of Nauru, replacing Adeang.

Political Events in 2013

Joining the Waqa Cabinet

After the 2013 parliamentary elections, David Adeang was re-elected. He supported Baron Waqa to become the new president. President Waqa then appointed Adeang to his cabinet. Adeang was given important roles, including Minister of Finance and Sustainable Development, and Minister of Justice. He also helped the President with other duties.

In July, when President Waqa was out of the country, Adeang was acting president. He made a decision to stop Nauruan media from showing an interview. In this interview, an opposition Member of Parliament had criticized the government's decision to fire the police chief. This action caused international attention and was criticized by the opposition.

A few days later, Adeang again stopped an interview from being shown. This interview was with another opposition Member of Parliament who was criticizing an agreement between Nauru and Australia. This agreement was about moving foreign refugees to Nauru. Adeang allowed an interview where he explained the government's view on the agreement to be shown. He said that the opposition's view did not match the government's understanding of the agreement.

Becoming President

On October 25, 2023, a vote was held in Parliament to remove President Russ Kun. This vote passed. After this, the Parliament voted for a new president, but there was a tie. On October 30, there was another vote. David Adeang and another Member of Parliament, Delvin Thoma, tied again. In the next vote, Adeang won with ten votes to Thoma's eight.

Adeang officially became president on October 31. He announced the members of his new government on the same day.
