Who is David Adeang? A Nauruan Leader
Early Life and Political Beginnings
David Adeang's father, Kennan Adeang, also served as President of Nauru three times. David started his career as a lawyer. In December 2001, he was elected to the Nauruan Parliament, representing the Ubenide area.
In May 2003, during a time of political change, David Adeang became a member of Parliament for the Naoero Amo party. This party worked with Ludwig Scotty and his supporters. When Mr. Scotty became president, David Adeang was appointed Minister of Finance in May 2003. He also served as Minister Assisting the President of Nauru. This role lasted for about three months before a new government was formed.
In 2004, David Adeang served briefly as the Speaker of the Parliament of Nauru. Later that year, he became the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Justice. It was notable because he was the first person to hold the foreign minister role without also being the President of Nauru. This showed a change in how Nauru's government worked. He was re-elected to Parliament in October 2004. He then took on the roles of Minister of Finance and continued as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
David Adeang was also one of the people who helped start the Nauru First political party.
Serving as a Minister and Speaker
David Adeang was re-elected to Parliament in August 2007. He received many votes from the Ubenide area.
Important Roles in Government
In 2007, as Foreign Minister, David Adeang visited Cuba. He spoke about Nauru's views on international relations during this trip.
Changes in Leadership
Later in 2007, there were some changes in Nauru's government. After a vote in Parliament in December, Marcus Stephen became the new president. David Adeang was then replaced as Foreign Minister by Kieren Keke.
In March 2008, David Adeang worked with former President Rene Harris to propose a vote about the current president, Marcus Stephen. This vote did not happen because the Speaker of Parliament resigned.
Soon after, in March 2008, David Adeang was chosen to be the Speaker of the Parliament of Nauru again. He started this role on March 20, 2008.
During this time, there were some disagreements in Parliament about rules for members. David Adeang, as Speaker, made some decisions that led to further discussions and debates among the politicians. The government and the Speaker had different ideas about how certain rules should be applied.
The Supreme Court of Nauru eventually made a decision about these rules. The court's ruling helped to resolve the disagreements. On April 18, 2008, President Stephen decided to dissolve Parliament and call for new elections to help solve the political situation.
After the elections in April 2008, David Adeang was replaced as Speaker by Riddell Akua. In July 2008, his political ally, former President Rene Harris, passed away.
In 2013, after being re-elected to Parliament, David Adeang supported Baron Waqa for president. When Mr. Waqa became president, David Adeang was given several important roles in the cabinet. He became the Minister for Finance and Sustainable Development and the Minister for Justice. He also oversaw the Eigigu Holdings Corporation and the Nauru Air Corporation. Additionally, he was appointed Minister Assisting the President of Nauru.
In July 2013, while acting as president, David Adeang made some decisions about what news could be shared with the public. He decided that certain interviews from opposition members would not be broadcast. He explained that he wanted to ensure the government's view was clearly presented. This decision led to discussions both within Nauru and internationally about media and information sharing.
Becoming President of Nauru
On October 25, 2023, the Parliament of Nauru held a vote about President Russ Kun. After this, the Parliament needed to choose a new president. On October 30, 2023, after several votes, David Adeang was elected as the new President of Nauru. He won with ten votes against Delvin Thoma's eight votes.
David Adeang officially became president on October 31, 2023. On the same day, he announced the team of ministers who would work with him in the government.
