David Brook (born around 1498, died 1560) was an important English judge and politician. He was also known as Brooke or Broke.

Life of David Brook

David Brook came from a family in the West country of England, specifically from Glastonbury, Somerset. His father, John Brook, was also a lawyer.

David Brook became a legal expert himself. He held important positions at the Inner Temple, which is one of the main places where lawyers are trained in London. He was a "reader" (a teacher) in 1534 and 1540, and also a "treasurer" (managing money) and "governor" (helping run the place).

He served as the "recorder" of Bristol from 1541 to 1549. A recorder was a judge who also advised the city on legal matters. During this time, he was also a Member of Parliament for Bristol from 1542 to 1544. This meant he helped make laws for the country.

In 1547, just as Edward VI became king, David Brook was given the special title of "serjeant-at-law." This was a very high rank for a lawyer. Later, in 1551, he became the "king's serjeant," which meant he was a top lawyer working for the king.

In 1553, he was appointed the "lord chief baron of the exchequer." This was a very important job, making him the head judge of a special court that dealt with the king's money and taxes. The day after Queen Mary was crowned, David Brook and others were made "knights of the carpet." This was a special honor given by the monarch.

David Brook continued to work as a judge until early 1558. He was known for a wise saying: 'Never do anything by another that you can do by yourself.' This means it's often best to handle things yourself if you can.

David Brook's Family

David Brook was married twice, but he did not have any children with either wife. His first wife was Katherine, and his second wife was Margaret.
