What is an MLA?
An MLA stands for Member of the Legislative Assembly. These are people elected by citizens to represent them in the Northern Ireland Assembly. The Assembly is like a parliament for Northern Ireland. MLAs help make laws and decisions for the region. They work to improve things for the people they represent.
Political Journey
Starting in Local Government
David Brooks began his political career in local government. He was first chosen by voters to join the Belfast City Council. This happened during the local elections in 2019. As a city councillor, he worked on issues directly affecting his local community in Lisnasharragh.
Moving to the Assembly
In the 2022 Assembly election, Mr. Brooks was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly. He became one of two DUP MLAs representing the Belfast East area. This was a step up from local council work. It meant he would now help make decisions for all of Northern Ireland.
His Role and Views
Mr. Brooks is the DUP's spokesperson for North–South relationships. This means he talks about how Northern Ireland works with the Republic of Ireland. He has also spoken out against actions that cause problems in communities. For example, he condemned certain displays that created division in 2022.
