Sammy Douglas's Political Journey
Sammy Douglas has held several important roles in Northern Ireland's government. He has worked at both the city level and the wider Northern Ireland level.
Starting in the Assembly
Douglas first became a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) in 2011. He was elected to represent the Belfast East area. MLAs are like elected representatives who make laws for Northern Ireland.
He was re-elected to his seat in the Assembly in 2016. This showed that people in his area supported his work.
In January 2017, Douglas decided not to run for re-election. This meant he would leave his role as an MLA in March 2017.
Return to City Politics
After leaving the Assembly, Douglas returned to local politics. In June 2022, he joined the Belfast City Council. He took over from another politician, David Brooks, in the Lisnasharragh area.
In 2023, he ran for election again and won. This time, he became a city councillor for the Titanic District. City councillors help manage local services and make decisions for the city.
High Sheriff of Belfast
In January 2024, Sammy Douglas was given a special job. He was appointed as the High Sheriff of Belfast. This is an important ceremonial role in the city.
