Sammy Douglas was born on February 22, 1953. He is a politician from the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). The DUP is one of the main political parties in Northern Ireland. Sammy Douglas has held several important roles in local government. He was the High Sheriff of Belfast from January 2024 until January 2025. He has also been a Belfast City Councillor since 2022. Before that, he was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Belfast East.

Serving in the Northern Ireland Assembly
Sammy Douglas was first elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2011. The Assembly is like a parliament for Northern Ireland. It makes laws and decisions for the region. He represented the area of Belfast East. He was re-elected in 2016. In January 2017, he decided not to run for re-election in the March 2017 Assembly election.
Working with Belfast City Council
After leaving the Assembly, Sammy Douglas returned to local politics in June 2022. He joined the Belfast City Council as a Councillor for the Lisnasharragh area. A Councillor is someone elected to represent a local area and make decisions for the city. He was then re-elected in 2023 for the Titanic District. As a Councillor, he helps make decisions about local services and issues in Belfast.
Role as High Sheriff of Belfast
In January 2024, Sammy Douglas was given the special role of High Sheriff of Belfast. This is an important ceremonial position in the city. The High Sheriff helps with civic events and supports the justice system. He held this role until January 2025.
