David Mendoza Consunji (born November 2, 1921 – died September 4, 2017) was a very important Filipino businessman. He was famous for starting a large construction company called DMCI. He also served in the Philippine government. From 1970 to 1975, he was the Secretary of Public Works, Transportation and Communications. This was during the time Ferdinand Marcos was president. In 2014, Forbes magazine said he was one of the richest people in the Philippines.
Early Life and School
David Consunji was born on November 2, 1921. His hometown was Samal, Bataan. His parents were Gaudencio Tongco Consunji and Consuelo Mendoza. He was the third oldest of at least nine children.
In 1939, David Consunji started studying at the University of the Philippines. He chose to study civil engineering. He finished his degree in 1946. In the same year, he passed his engineering board exam.
Building a Career
After graduating, Mr. Consunji first worked as a teacher in Bataan. Later, he became a concrete inspector. In 1954, he started his own company. He named it D.M. Consunji, Incorporated. He was the chairman of this company for many years.
In 1995, he created a new company called DMCI Holdings. This company was made to bring all his different businesses together.
Mr. Consunji was also a leader in many important groups. He was the president of the Philippine Contractors Association. He also led the International Federation of Asian & Western Pacific Contractors' Association. He was also president of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers. He helped lead other groups too, like the Confederation of International Contractors' Association. He was also the chairman of the Contractors Association. He also chaired the Philippine Domestic Construction Board. And he led the U. P. Engineering Research and Development Foundation.
His Later Years
David Consunji passed away on September 4, 2017. He was 95 years old. The reason for his death was not shared publicly.
Mr. Consunji wrote a book about his life. It was called A Passion to Build: A Memoir of David M. Consunji. Today, his son, Isidro Consunji, is the president and chairman of DMCI Holdings. One of his grandchildren, Victor Consunji, is married to Maggie Wilson. She was a beauty queen in 2007.
