David Farley's Political Journey
David Farley has been involved in different areas before becoming an MP. His career shows how people can move between business and politics.
Early Career and Party Changes
In 2012, David Farley was the chief executive of the Australian Agricultural Company. This company is one of Australia's oldest cattle businesses. At that time, he supported bringing in many workers from India. He also had different ideas from another politician, Barnaby Joyce, about foreign companies investing in Australian farmland.
Later, in 2020, Mr. Farley applied to join the Australian Labor Party. Before this, he was a member of the NSW Nationals. This shows he has been part of different political groups over time.
The 2026 Farrer By-election
In 2023, Mr. Farley supported a community group called Voices for Farrer. He also backed an independent candidate named Michelle Milthorpe. She ran in the 2025 federal election.
Michelle Milthorpe later became his main opponent. They both ran in a special election called the 2026 Farrer by-election.
Mr. Farley was elected as the MP for Farrer in this by-election. A by-election is a special election held to fill a vacant seat. This particular election happened because the previous MP, Sussan Ley, resigned. She had represented the Farrer area for 25 years.
