Becoming Mayor of Belize City
David Fonseca first joined the Belize City Council in 1989. In 1992, he served as mayor. At that time, the mayor was chosen each year by the council members.
In March 1999, something new happened. David Fonseca became the first mayor of Belize City to be directly elected by the people. He won against Anthony "Boots" Martinez. Martinez was from the United Democratic Party. Fonseca was re-elected for a second term in 2003. He did not run for re-election in 2006.
