Early Life and School
David Goggins was born on February 17, 1975. He grew up in Williamsville, New York, with his parents and brother. His father owned a roller-skating rink called Skateland. From a young age, David often helped out at the rink, even working late nights.
When David was six, his mother left his father and moved with her sons to Brazil, Indiana, to live with David's grandparents. David's brother later went back to live with their father.
David started second grade at a small Catholic school. He found learning difficult because he had not attended much school before. He also had a stutter, which made him feel shy around others. During his school years in Brazil, Indiana, David faced unfair treatment because of his race. He remembers seeing hurtful words written on his school items and car.
Before starting high school, David attended a special course about becoming a pararescue jumper. His grandfather, who had been in the Air Force, encouraged him to go.
Military Career
David Goggins applied to join the United States Air Force Pararescue team and was accepted for training. During this training, he had a health condition that temporarily stopped him from continuing. Instead, he trained to be a United States Air Force Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) member. He worked as a TACP from 1994 to 1999.
Later, David decided to become a Navy SEAL. He joined the reserves and worked hard to meet the strict weight requirements. He lost 106 pounds in just three months to qualify for the training. David successfully completed the tough BUD/S training in 2001. After more training, he became a Navy SEAL and was assigned to SEAL Team 5. During his 20 years in the military, David Goggins served in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2004, he also graduated from the Army Ranger School.
Helping Others
In 2005, some of David's military friends died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan. This inspired David to start long-distance running to raise money for a good cause. He wanted to help the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which provides college scholarships for children of soldiers who died in special operations. By competing in very challenging endurance races, including the Badwater Ultramarathon three times, David Goggins raised over $2 million for the foundation.
