About David Greaves
David Greaves was born on 1 September 1946. His hometown was St-Annes-on-Sea in Lancashire, England. He went to school in Cleveleys and Fleetwood. Later, he studied Quantity Surveying at Blackpool Technical College.
From a young age, David loved snooker. He spent a lot of time practicing and playing. After college, he achieved his dream of becoming a professional snooker player.
The Commonwealth Sporting Club
In April 1977, David Greaves started something new. He opened the Commonwealth Sporting Club. Famous snooker player Joe Davis helped open it. David wanted to create a better place for snooker. Back then, many snooker clubs were dark and not very welcoming.
The Commonwealth Club was different. It was bright and modern. It had 25 full-size snooker tables. There was even a special snooker arena. This arena could hold over 200 people. It was used for big matches and shows.
Many top snooker stars visited the club. John Spencer, a three-time World Champion, was a regular. Cliff Thorburn from Canada, who won the World Championship in 1980, also practiced there. He often used "Table 4," which was known for having very tight pockets. This made it a tough challenge for players.
The club also hosted the English Amateur final. This was a very important event for amateur players. Winning it meant you could become a professional snooker player. This made the Commonwealth Club a famous place in the snooker world.
David Greaves' Snooker Career
David Greaves became a professional snooker player in 1972. He was 25 years old. His first professional match was in the 1973 World Championship. He played against Bernard Bennett. David won that match 9–8 after being far behind.

World Championship Attempts
David tried to qualify for the World Championship many times. In 1977, he lost 11–0 to David Taylor. In 1981, he won a match against Maurice Parkin. But then he lost to Willie Thorne and didn't make it to the main event at the Crucible Theatre.
He faced tough losses in other years too. In 1984, he lost 10–0 to Ray Edmonds. In 1989, he lost by the same score to Ian Graham.
Other Tournaments
David Greaves played in other snooker tournaments. He didn't win many of his first matches in these events. Out of 61 opening matches, he won only ten.
His best result was reaching the last 32 players. This happened in the English Professional Championship in 1988. This tournament was not for world ranking points. He earned £563 from this event. This was the biggest prize money of his career.
David's world ranking dropped over time. In 1993, he was ranked 157th. He then stopped playing on the professional snooker tour.
David Greaves passed away on 5 October 2019. He was 73 years old. He died in Blackpool Victoria Hospital after a short illness.
