David Ipp facts for kids
David Andrew Ipp (1938 – 8 October 2020) was an important lawyer and judge. He was born in South Africa and later moved to Australia. From 2009 to 2014, he served as the Commissioner of the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption, which is an organization that investigates corruption in government. He was also a judge in the highest court of New South Wales, called the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

Early Life and Education
David Ipp was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He went to Parktown Boys' High School there. After high school, he studied at the University of Stellenbosch, where he earned degrees in business and law.
Becoming a Lawyer and Judge
In 1964, David Ipp became a partner at a law firm in Johannesburg. He officially became a lawyer in South Africa in 1973.
He moved to Australia in 1981 and became a lawyer in Western Australia. In 1985, he was appointed a Queen's Counsel, which is a special title given to experienced lawyers.
David Ipp held several important positions. He was the Treasurer of the Law Society of Western Australia in 1988. He also spent time as a Fellow at the University of Western Australia and the University of London. In 1994, he was a Fulbright Senior Scholar, which is a special award for academic exchange.
From 1989 to 2002, David Ipp was a judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia. He was in charge of civil cases for many years. Later, he became a judge of the NSW Court of Appeal in 2002. He also served as a judge on the Supreme Court of Fiji.
David Ipp was a member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport since 2000. This court helps solve disputes in sports.
Changing Laws About Injuries
In 2002, David Ipp led a group of experts to look at and suggest changes to "tort laws" in Australia. Tort laws deal with civil wrongs that cause someone else to suffer loss or harm, resulting in legal liability for the person who commits the act. Think of it like laws about personal injury claims.
His group wrote a report called the Ipp Report. Many of the ideas in this report were used by state governments to create new laws about personal injuries. However, in 2007, David Ipp felt that some of the changes went too far.
Leading the Anti-Corruption Commission
In November 2009, David Ipp was chosen to be the Commissioner of the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). The ICAC is an important organization that works to prevent and investigate corruption in the government of New South Wales. He retired from this role in January 2014 due to health reasons.

David Ipp passed away in Sydney on 8 October 2020, at the age of 82.
