The David J. and May Bock Woodward House is a special historic home. It is located in San Antonio, Texas, in Bexar County. This house was recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1994. It was also added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 16, 1996. This means it's an important building worth preserving!

The Woodward House: A Historic Home

This beautiful 2 1/2-story house was designed between 1904 and 1905. A famous architect named Atlee Ayres created its plans. The house is built in a "Classic revival" style. This style often uses ideas from ancient Greek and Roman buildings.

Who Lived Here?

The house was built for a businessman named David J. Woodward (1864–1925) and his wife, May Bock Woodward (1866–1942). David and May were quite unique! They bought and sold many homes during their marriage. David would build or improve the houses, and May would decorate them. They would then sell each house for a profit and move to a bigger, more expensive one. They "flipped" twenty-three homes in their lifetime!

What Does It Look Like Inside?

When the Woodwards lived here, the first floor had a parlor, a library with a fireplace, a butler's pantry, an office, a kitchen, a powder room, and a dining room. The second floor was where the family lived. It had five bedrooms, a bathroom, and a sitting room. The very top floor was designed to be a ballroom, with special window seats. Imagine having a ballroom in your house!

A Home for the Community

After David Woodward passed away, May sold the house in 1926. She sold it to the Woman's Club of San Antonio for $47,000. Today, the house is used as the club's meeting place. The Woman's Club made some changes to the house. For example, they turned three of the bedrooms on the second floor into one large meeting room. The top floor, which was once meant to be a ballroom, is now used for storage. This historic house continues to be a special place for the community.
